LE BURGER WEEK
It all started in 2012 in Montreal as a small food festival for burger connoisseurs in the region. Since then the festival has become a national event. Restaurants across the country take part in the burger competition every year in September.
Patrons have a week to try as many unique burger masterpieces as possible and cast their vote for the best burger in town. Who will be crowned this years burger champion?
My friends and I found out about this a couple of years ago, give or take a couple of years. My apologies, my memories are failing me … We have made it a point to at least try one of the local entries every year. Let’s just say seven days wasn’t enough to try them all this year. Winnipeg had over 100 entries in 2017!
Over the years I have tried unique burgers from Mon Amis Louis, Shwarma Khan and Bronuts to name a few. This year my friends and I decided to go try the creations at “The Deer + Almond” and “One Great City”.
THE DEER + ALMOND
“The Deer + Almond” is a fancier restaurant found in the exchange district. This is not a place you would go to grab a burger regularly. “The Deer + Almond” served wonderfully delicious food, but I personally found the portions served to be extremely small for the price point. The burger advertised was called “Let Us Taco Bout Burgers Next Week”.
The taco burger was an fusion mix between Asian and Mexican cuisine. A pork and prawn patty, topped with cilantro, pickled onions, crushed Doritos, drizzled with a tangy spicy sauce. All its contents wrapped in a soft fluffy shell breading.
The taste was similar to a Vietnamese sub / banh mi. The shell had a similar texture to a steamed pork bun. The meat was juicy and succulent. My friends found the sauce to be a bit too spicy, but I would have personally liked it to have a bit more kick.
Overall the taco burger was delicious, but it did not satisfy my burger cravings. I left the restaurant unsatisfied, not because the food wasn’t delicious, but because I was still hungry.
ONE GREAT CITY
My second and final burger of the week was at “One Great City”. A new local brew pub located on Ness Avenue that served “The Italian Fat Boy”.
Absolutely one of the best burgers I have had in awhile. “The Italian Fat Boy” consisted of a thick beef patty, bolognese, lettuce, provolone, dripping in a savory tomato sauce. It was a hardy meal that satisfies ones burger cravings. Each bite was juicier and cheesier than the last. This burger should be added to their regular menu. Satisfaction guaranteed!
A full customer is a happy customer! Nothing better then a delicious burger to fill an empty stomach after a long days work.
If you attended “Le Burger Week”, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did! If you missed out, there is always next year. There is almost one event lined up every weekend heading into winter in Manitoba. What to attend next?!?!?
Planning to visit Winnipeg in September, check out some of the other events that are held around this time.
